Polynesian tattoos, deeply rooted in the rich cultural heritage of the Polynesian people, have gained worldwide recognition as a captivating and distinct tattoo style. Originating from the Polynesian islands of the Pacific, these tattoos showcase a harmonious blend of intricate patterns, symbolic motifs, and usually deep cultural significance.
Polynesian tattoos are renowned for their bold lines, geometric shapes, and mesmerizing symmetrical designs that often span across large areas of the body.
Whether it's the powerful Maori-inspired designs or the delicate patterns of Samoan Tatau, Polynesian tattoos offer a compelling way for individuals to embrace the artistry and cultural identity of the Pacific islands.

Where can I get a traditional Hawaiian tattoo in Honolulu?
At Tattoolicious Tattoo Waikiki. We're the only tattoo shop in the Hawaiian Islands offering traditional hand-tap tatau and kākau in a shop setting, a first for a tattoo shop in Hawaii. Sulu'ape RiccyBoy works full time at the shop, tattooing by traditional hand tap. The shop was blessed by Hawaiian Sulu'ape Keone Nunes, who is credited, along with Keli'iokalai Teawenohoitalani Makua, with bringing kākau back in Hawaii.
Hand-tap work is planned by consultation, not done as a quick walk-in, so there's time to talk through meaning, placement and protocol. Our resident Polynesian artists also design custom machine-tattooed Polynesian pieces.
What is kākau?
Kākau is traditional Hawaiian tattooing. It is tied to identity, genealogy and protection, and it's related to Samoan tatau and other Polynesian traditions while having its own history and meaning.
