IS IT POSSIBLE TO CONTRACT AN INFECTION FROM GETTING A NEW TATTOO?
A tattoo can turn into an infected wound if bacteria infiltrates the skin. But, don't let that stop you from getting a tattoo! Proper aftercare is the key to reducing the risk of infection. Your tattoo artist will wrap the area and provide you with comprehensive aftercare instructions. Adhering to these guidelines will not only ensure a speedy and healthy healing process, but also preserve the vibrancy of the colors, the richness of the blacks and greys, and minimize the risk of infection.
So say goodbye to the worries of infection, as each tattoo session is equipped with brand new supplies that are disposed of immediately after use. When the aftercare is properly followed, the risk of infection is significantly reduced for a stress-free tattoo experience.
WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO HEAL MY NEW TATTOO (AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS)?
Tattoolicious offers aftercare suggestions to aid in the healing of your new tattoo. We strive to provide the best information, which is based on a combination of our professional experience, research, and input from healthcare professionals such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. After getting a tattoo, it's important to properly care for it to promote healing and prevent negative side effects. Follow these instructions for the best results:
-
Listen to your tattoo artist and follow their instructions carefully.
-
Keep the bandage on for the time frame recommended by your artist, typically 2-24 hours.
-
Optional: soak the bandage with warm water when removing it if it is stuck to your tattoo.
-
Wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, unscented liquid antibacterial or antimicrobial soap. Gently pat it dry with a clean towel or paper towel.
-
Apply a thin layer of ointment for 2-3 days as advised by your artist. Apply it twice a day. Once the artist says, switch over to lotion.
-
Continue washing and applying ointment or lotion as directed by your tattoo artist until the tattoo fully heals. It may appear cloudy for a few days, known as "onion skin", but should look clearer when wet.
IS IT ACCEPTABLE TO SWIM WITH A FRESHLY ACQUIRED TATTOO?
It is recommended to avoid swimming and soaking in water (e.g. bathtubs, hot tubs, pools etc.) for at least 2 weeks after getting a tattoo to allow sufficient time for healing and to minimize the risk of infection. Avoid swimming in natural bodies of water (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, etc.) for at least 4 weeks after getting a tattoo. Here in Hawai'i our warm ocean water carries more bacteria and we want to ensure your tattoo has the best possible chance at healing! Staying out of heavy sunlight such as sunbathing and away from abrasive sand at the beach will also help the healing process be as easy on your body and as quick as possible. After 2 weeks, it is okay to swim in a clean, chlorinated pool.
IS IT PERMISSIBLE TO TRAVEL BY AIR WITH A NEWLY ACQUIRED TATTOO?
Traveling by air with a new tattoo is allowed, but it's important to minimize the risk of infection by keeping the tattoo clean. Your tattoo artist can offer suggestions for maintaining its cleanliness during travel or provide a bandage to cover it until you reach your destination.
